Krkonoše Mountains
The Krkonoše Mountains – an island of tundra in the heart of Europe – are a unique mosaic of mountain ecosystems. The mountain slopes are covered in mountain forests and meadows, while blueberry bushes, alpine grasses and peat bog societies grow on the upper sections of the flat ridges. The moraine areas, which were created by means of the actions of glaciers in the past, are especially rich in species. Due these exceptional features and landscapes, the area was declared a national park in 1963. The administration of the territory has been assigned to the Krkonoše Mountains National Park Administration based in Vrchlabí.
