The Giant Mountains – peat bogs

Krkonoše Mountains

Peat bogs are one of the forms of arctic-alpine tundra in the Giant Mountains which constitute an absolutely unique natural environment within the context of all of Central Europe.

The best-known peat bogs are located in the Black Mountain national nature reserves which are located in a mountain depression about 1 km to the north of the Black Mountain peak. Experts have dated their origins to the period approximately 6000 years ago.

Another peat bog is the Úpa Peat Bog which is located in a shallow depression between Hraniční Ridge and Studniční hora about 2 km to the west of Sněžka, at an altitude of 1400 - 1425 m above sea level.
