Bohemian Paradise
Locality: 5 km to the north from Jičín, to the north from the village of Brada-Rybníček.
The oldest mentions of Brada Castle date back to the 13th century. At the beginning of the 14th century Brada was connected to Veliš, a royal castle; under the rule of John Luxembourg the property was acquired by the Vartemberk family (1327). Brada was a part of Veliš until the end of the 1430s. Towards the end of the 15th century Brada Castle was deteriorating and was slowly ruined.
Above the ruins of the castle is a large platform on which are erected a cross and two statues – St. Peter and St. Paul – to commemorate the battle of 1866 between the Austrian and Prussian armies. The rather large castle was built partly of wood and partly of brick. About 200 metres behind the ruins is the Rumcajsova jeskyně (cave).
There is no observation tower near the castle, but there is a good view of the nearby surroundings and Jičín, so it is advisable to choose a day with good visibility for the trip.
You can reach Brada Castle by the E42 road from the direction of Jičín – Turnov, and between the villages of Kbelnice and Podůlší turn left. You can park for free at the church and after walking about 100 metres around the pension you can ascend all the way up to the castle.
